The dispatcher's line said this was an "oiler" and it is oiling the main line between Aurora and Savanna. EPA would go balistic! The mid-train diesel is CB&Q SD9 329, see: http://railfan44.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=581337 |

I'm not sure of the purpose of the train. My guess is to oil curves on this Zephyr line between Chicago and the Twin Cities, but that's a lot o oil! EPA would probably go balistic. |

CB&Q 9245 in 1964 |
Description: |
The CB&Q Mt. Morris Spur heads north 7 miles from the main line at Oregon, Illinois which is about half way between Savanna and Aurora, Illinois. It exists because of a major printer in Mt. Morris that receives paper and ships magazines. Shown here is the Mt. Morris Turn working in Mt. Morris on September 3, 1964. |

Description: |
Looking like a mixed train because of the 40 ft. combine on the rear this day instead of a way car (CB&Q jargon for caboose), this is the Oregon Turn with NW2 9234 doing the pulling. It near Rochelle, IL on September 5, 1964 while making its round trip between Oregon, IL and the Eola, IL yards on the line to the Twin Cities. All the corn stalks in the field have been cut. |

The Night Leverman/Operator at Montgomery Tower |
Description: |
A self portrait. The box at the right with the crank is a generator, which rings the phones on the line it is plugged into (see the four plug holes in front of the towerman). The greenish papers hanging diagonally are train orders (aka filmsie). The box partially visible box in the upper right corner is the sounder for the telegraph (not used that night). The lit light of the four lights at the right indicates a westbound train is approaching on the westbound track. |

CB&Q 165ABC in 1964 |
Description: |
Early F units usually came in set of 4, i.e., ABBA. The CB&Q found that for most trains on its mostly flat railroad ABA sets were sufficient so the ABBAs were broken into ABs with another newer A added. On the CB&Q an ABBA set was lettered ABCD and an ABA set was lettered ABC. In this picture we see CB&Q 165A, an F7A and 165B and C, F3Bs. The train is the early morning "Pick Up" at Milledgeville, IL (122 miles from Chicago on the Twin Cities Line). If the train had a number, it was never used on the dispatcher's line. Yes it is a heck of a train to be doing local switching, but it did weekdays. |

Duplicate slide purchased years ago. FW&D E5AB diesel numbers an educated guess. Date unknown. Best guess on trains is Texas Zephyr, Twin Star Rocket, and Texas Chief though it seems be a totally posed or fabricated picture. The sky looks fake, no buildings. The AT&SF E8A looks too big, maybe. Who has the original and description? |
