Having passed through one of Clearwater's buildings, the 4924 then had to cross North Lake Street to get to this point. Once the mill opens the door, the unit will move in to pick up four boxcars from within. Description: |
The Canadian National switches the General Chemical facility in Menasha, WI. The industrial spur this is located on was once used to serve the Gilbert Paper Company mill in Menasha. Gilbert Paper was served by two spurs, the other spur came across from the other side of the Fox River, through U.S. Papers and served Gilberts and Banta Corp. Some of the cars spotedd at Gilbert Paper on that spur were on a trestle over the water. Milwaukee Road, Soo Line and Chicago and Northwestern could all be seen on the rails in this paper producing area prior to 1987. |

This is a section of Chicago & Northwestern's Valley Subdivision mainline in Neenah. The subdivision was from Fond du Lac to Green Bay via Oshkosh, Neenah, Menasha, Appleton etc. This line now ends here at the factory that covered hoppers are spotted at the end of the visible track. I do not know for certain about the three doors with track running into them. I think it is part of Kimberly-Clark. It looks like it could be an engine house, though I have my doubts about that. Perhaps someone can let us know. |

Description: |
A CN train waits on the fjrmer CNW main under the Bell Street overpass for clearance into Neenah. The cars in the middle of the scene are crossing over from former Soo Line R.o.W. to the former CNW R.j.W. Strangely, either the Wisconsin Central or the CN saw it fitting to remove a section of the CNW track between the cut of cars and the train under the overpass. Neenah Fourdry (formerly Neenah Foundry Plant 2) and Voith Paper Rolls are somewhat visible on the left. The track leading off to the lower left serves what is now a Bemis facility. Originally it was an American Can plant that changed hands a few times since The American Can/ National Can merger in 1987. In 1988 it became part of Pechiney then to Alcan in%2003. Alcan went to Rio Tinto in 2007 who then sold off the packaging business to Bemis in 2010 for $1.2 billion. With that acquisition, Bemis captured a 70% global market share in food packaging, up from 57%. Five years later, this plant is still running and receiving car loads of plastic pellets. |

A CN local serving industries along what was once the main right of way thru the Fox Cities for the CNW. Ther crew is crossing Commercial Street in Neenah. The CNW's yard was right in this area with at least three tracks crossing Comercial Street. Currently only two tracks cross the road with only a few businesses receiving rail service to the 4928's rear. The middle section of the CNW route thru Neenah has been torn out, but businesses are still served on each side of town with access from the former Soo Line right of way. The yard that was here which the CNW worked out of to serve Neenah and Menasha has been stripped of about half of its tracks and now only serves to organize the local's cars for switching the industries reached from this point. |

A GTW unit moves along an industrial spur towards the Washington Street grade crossing. The trees make it hard to see, but the unit is traversing between two old defunct rail served buildings to which the turnouts have been removed and mother nature is trying to reclaim. To get to this point, the crew has taken a turnout from the former CNW Neenah Yard on it's north end and ducked in behind the buildings. This spur used to go all the way to serve Gilbert Paper Comany but now only serves the former General Chemical facility. I noticed the General Chemical facility has recently changed names since the new year, unfortunately I do not recall the new name. |

The train is across what was once the Sherry Street grade crossing, which was taken out of service with the building of overpasses at Main Street, Winneconne Ave. and Cecil Streets. IC 9571 |
Description: |
The 9571 works the Neenah yard from the north end. The Winneconne overpass crosses the tracks here now, but not too long ago, the crossing was at grade. Winneconne Avenue was protected by lights, gates and had a manned elevated tower due to the frequent moves made across the grade crossing. This was the first overpass of three put in to avoid delays in road traffic. |
