Start of support piles
Title:  Start of support piles
Description:  This is a shot of some of the first piles to be driven. They went down 100 feet. When the H beam got close to the end, another was welded on top until the correct depth was reached. The noise from the pile driving could be heard for quite some distance, and was very annoying.

A number of piles in place
Title:  A number of piles in place
Description:  A number of piles have been driven into place and the pile driver is at the south end of the bridge. It has to finish this side, then work over the bridge on the other side, which was no accesable to heavy equipment.

Piles in place

Description:  Once the piles were in place, they were squared and welded together to form units that would be made into the shape for holding giant concrete blocks, which are the foundation of the bridge.
