Making the turn at Bedford
Title:  Making the turn at Bedford
Description:  A pair of Indiana RR SD60s (6009, 6006) turn to the west off the old Monon and onto the former CP/SOO/MILW tracks in Bedford Indiana. Bedford, located in the heart of Indiana's limestone cutting region, used to host the Monon, Milwaukee Road and B&O. The only set of through tracks now come up from Mitchell over the former Monon (now CSX) which splits the town through five blocks of street running. They then turn 90 degrees to the west (as shown here) and intersect the original MILW route, which is seen running to the left (that's the old Milwaukee depot in the background). They then turn back to the southwest and dive back into the Indiana woods and coal country while heading in the general direction of Terre Haute and Chicago.

Bedford
Title:  Bedford
Description:  Looking north in Bedford, Indiana; at the point (MP 246) where the CSX (which inherited the L&N/Monon routes) from Mitchell ends. About five blocks of street running are behind the photographer. At this point the ex-Monon mainline becomes the Indiana RR, which takes the switch and turn to the left over the former Milwaukee Road/SOO/CP (from MP 262.5). The creaky track straight ahead is what's left of the MON mainline to Chicago. The road's depot, with its red roof, sits to the right; it's now the town's recycling center. Both CSX and IRR filed to abandon these lines in 2010.

Along M street in Bedford
Title:  Along M street in Bedford
Description:  Although Bedford Indiana is noted for its north/south street running, the line exits town by winding its way between houses and roads as it conducts a wide 180 degree reversal through the heart of the town. This is M street and the train is headed west on the former MILW, now Indiana RR. In a few blocks the line turns back to the south, and then southwest as it vanishes again into the Hoosier woods.

Rainy Day in Bedford
Title:  Rainy Day in Bedford
Description:  Bedford Indiana is a fascinating town and must've been really something when the Monon, Milwaukee Road and B&O all called here. It's now more of a rail ghost town with parts that seem like they're locked in a time warp. This is the former Milwaukee Road depot on J Street; the tracks came up in 2010 and were last used by INRD. The famed CSX line through downtown and south to Mitchell remains in place for now even if out of service. The city has actually acquired some former INRD industrial trackage to retain the possiblity of eventual return of rail service, although that seems a long shot right now.

Crew Change- and KCS Power- in Western Indiana
Title:  Crew Change- and KCS Power- in Western Indiana
Description:  It's almost sunset on a Sunday evening in Vincennes IN. A nice evening surprise appeared as the "Schneider Train" (symbol Q106) comes off the the old B&O St Louis line and turns onto the L&N/C&EI path to Cdicago. They pull to a stop at Minneapolis Blvd, the crew is quickly changed, and they're soon northbound with an ultimate destination of Schneider's Marion OH terminal. TFM 1658 leads KCS 3967 tonight; the train is apparently detouring off its normal route due to work on the former CR/PRR line in central Illinois.
