Viewing Album: Geislinger Ramp - Germany
By:
Peider SwissTrip
Dates:
1/1/2011 - 12/31/2011
Album Info:
The Fils Valley Railway (German: Filstalbahn) designates the Württemberg line from Stuttgart via Göppingen to Ulm. It runs from Plochingen to Geislingen an der Steige (at the ramp) through the Fils Valley. The line is also considered as the first railway to cross a low mountain range in Europe because of the Geislinger Ramp. The upward gradient amounts to 1:44.5 or 2.2%. The line was opened in June 1850. The summit is reached at Amstetten, at 582 m / 1900 ft above sea level. Beside of ICE, DB and OBB Intercity, Regional Express with double decker carriages hauled by Class 146.2 locomotives and InterRegioExpress Sprinter with diesel power are heavy DB Railion and privat operator freight trains on the Fils Valley Railway. For DB Schenker Rail trains (formerly DB Cargo and Railion) there are two DB Class 151 engines at Geislingen waiting for pushing services. An interesting day is for sure. NEWEST pictures always first in my albums.
