GAINESVILLE TX July 25 1979 -- Santa Fe GP9u 2250 and GP30u 3276 power the Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus train on its journey from Oklahoma City to the Dallas-Fort Worth area. EMD built the 2250 as ATSF 702 (s/n 21572) in May 1956 and delivered it in zebra stripe paint. In late 1969-early 1970 it was renumbered to ATSF 2902. After mid-June 1972 it was repainted to blue-yellow warbonnet. On April 25 1978 the Cleburne TX shops rebuilt it as a GP9u and renumbered it to ATSF 2250. After a stint in SPSF paint it regained blue-yellow warbonnet before Jan 1 1991 after the proposed SP-ATSF merger was rejected. On Sept 22 1995 it was transferred to BNSF and on June 4 1998 was rebuilt and renumbered to BNSF 1639 but still wore its warbonnet paint. On March 23 2010 Mark Herren shot the unit in Spalding ID on the Bountiful Grain and Craig Mountain Railroad. It was painted BG&CM orange and black. Description: |
FRIONA TX Jan 23 1984 -- Santa Fe SD45-2 5669 speeds along the Transcon with a coal train in tow. EMD built the 5669 (s/n 72642-26) in June 1973 and delivered it in Blue with yellow warbonnet. In Feb 1986 the San Bernardion CA shops rebuilt it to an SD45-2u, painted it in SPSF colors and renumbered it to 7200. Before Jan 1 1991 it was repainted back to yellow warbonnet and renumbered 5800. It underwent maintenance at Morrison Knudsen in April 1994 and gained MKM marks below the road numbers on the cab sides. It was transferred to BNSF on Sept 22 1995 and on Feb 19 1998 it was patched and renumbered BNSF 6450. POTTTSBORO TX Jan 28 1985 -- UP 4-8-4 8444 puts on a smoke show as it approaches the underpass at Texas Farm Market 120. The railfan crowd on the bridge was joined by a lone onlooker in the field below. The train is returning to Cheyenne WY after an appearance at the Louisiana World Exhibition in New Orleans. |

SAGINAW TX February 1986 -- Burlington Northern GP40-2s 3049 and 3047 handle a mixed freight. Both are former St.Louis San Francisco locomotives. EMD built the 3049 as SLSF 759 (b/n 786186-10) in May 1979. The 3047 was built as SLSF 757 (b/n 786186-8) also in May 1979. Both were retired in September 1997. They were acquired by Kansas City Southern as KCS 4809 and KCS 4807 respectively. It gained MP yellow paint on Sept 21 1984, was renumbered UP 71 on April 15 1988, was renumbered to UP 981 on May 22 1992, was renumbered to UP 5579 on March 18 1997 and was renumbered to UP 1679 on Dec 11 2001.m It was retired on Sept 30 2004. HEREFORD TX June 20 1986 -- BN 5125 C30-7 5125 leads a loaded coal train in the Texas Panhandle on the Santa Fes Transcon. GE built the 5125 (s/n 42917) in July 1980. In October 1992 it was converted to a C33-7 to boost its horsepower from 3000 to 3300. It was retired in May 2002 and eventualy went to Brazil as NREX 5125. AMARILLO TX July 6 1986 -- Santa Fe GP35u 2888 leads a covered hopper train on the Transcon. The 2888 started life in June 1965 as ATSF 1388 (s/n 30102) in blue with yellow ends. It was renumbered to 3388 as part of the general renumbering and gained yellow warbonnet paint after nude June 1972. It was rebuilt by Santa Fe as a GP35u in April 1983. FARWELL TX July 6 1986 -- Santa Fe SD45u 5366 handles the head end of a mixed freight. Santa Fe built the 5366 in October 1966 as SD45 ATSF 1832 (s/n 32508) in blue with yellow ends. In April-July 1970 it was renumbered to 5532 as part of the general renumbering. Sometime after Aug 26 1972 it was repainted into yellow warbonnet. In September 1983 the San Bernardino CA shops rebuilt it to an SD45u and renumbered to 5366. In June 1992 it was laid up bad order, was retired and sold to Morrison Knudsen before April 17 1994. It was renumbered MKCX 5366, leased to ATSF and then leased to BNSF on Aug 22 1995. In May 1996 or early 1997 it was sold to Helm Financial and leased to BNSF as HLCX. It was returned to Helm before February 2000, stored at Boise Locomotive Co and on Feb 21 2001 was sold to Transportation Corporation of America and became CEFX 3145. Description: |
AMARILLO TX July 6 1986 -- Santa Fe SD45u 5394 leads seven other locomotives westbound on the south side of Amarillo. The unit was built by EMD as ATSF 5597 (s/n 35002) in April 1969 and delivered it as a Locotrol master in blue with yellow ends and no rear footboards. It was rebuilt in August 1985 as an SD45u at the San Bernardino CA shops. It was renumbered to 5394 and became the first unit to wear the SPSF colors. It had a white SF on the long hood sides which was later changed to yellow. Before Jan 1 1991 it was painted back to yellow warbonnet. In August 1994 it was retired and sold to Wisconsin Central Railway as WC 6624 and in 1995 was repainted into WC colors. Canadian National acquired it Oct 9 2001, retired it on Nov 1 2001 and it went to Hilliard Enterprises on July 11 2002. It has been reported to have been scrapped. EMD built the 5107 (s/n 786219-37) in October 1979. It was delivered in yellow warbonnet, repainted to SPSF red-yellow between July 31 1985 and July 24 1986 (pre-July 7 for sure), restored to yellow warbonnet before Jan 1 1991, rebuilt by the San Bernardino CA shops to an SD40-2u in June 1991, underwent maintenance at Morrison Knudsen in April 1994, transferred to BNSF on Sept 22 1995 upon the merger, renumbered and patched to BNSF 6766 On Jan 10 2000. FARWELL TX July 7 1986 -- Santa Fe SD45u 5321 is on the ground and awaiting a work crew. In October-December 1966 EMD built the unit as ATSF 1844 (s/n 32520) and delivered it painted blue with yellow ends. In April-July 1970 it was renumbered to ATSF 554 and after Aug 26 1972 it gained yellow warbonnet paint. In January 1982 the San Bernardino CA shops rebuilt it to an SD45u and renumbered it to ATSF 5321. It was retired in February 1993 and sold to Wisconsin Central Railway in March 1993, repainted and renumbered WC 6593. It was reportedly sold to National Railway Equipment Co in October 2006. ATSF 8146 FARWELL TX July 7 1986 -- Santa Fe C30-7 awaits work. A few days later I shot this lashup west of Mountainaire NM GE built the 8146 (s/n 43573) as an RCE Locotrol master in June 1981 and delivered it in yellow warbonnet. As part of the proposed merger of Santa Fe and Southern Pacific it was painted in SPSF red and yellow warbonnet sometime between July 31 1985 and July 7 1986. It was retired in SPSF paint, leased to GE in December 1989 and was placed in the GECX lease fleet. It was leased by Union Pacific between Feb 20 1990 and March 4 1990 and carried the number UPL 8146. It was later leased by BNSF, patched and renumbered to BNSF 5189 while still in SPSF paint. It is listed as being Laid up pending disposition at Pasco WA in April 1999. A Gene Crossett photo shows it in West Burlington IL and reports it went to National Railway Equipment Co in June 2002. It is also listed on the April 19 2012 Minnesota Commercial Motive Power roster as No (MNNR) 56.
