Altoona Action. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide via Al Chione that was taken in Altoona, Pennsylvania, c. 1956. The photographer is not identified. Shown here (L to R) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #8607 and #8610. Both are APS-24MS's built by the American Locomotive Company and rated at 2,400 horsepower each. #8607 was constructed in December of 1955, while #8610 was built one month later. Note the passenger-service air hoses just to the right of the coupler. Partially visible in the right background are portions of Juniata's 17th Street Bridge and the East Altoona Roundhouse. |

Byerly. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide via Fred Byerly that was taken in Altoona, Pennsylvania, c. 1964. The photographer is not identified. Photo Caption: "Alco RSD-7 #8607, 2400-hp, at Altoona, Pa." Shown here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #8607, an APS-24MS built by the American Locomotive Company in December of 1955 and rated at 2,400 horsepower. Partially visible in the middle distance is a trio of ALCn AS-18AM engines, awaiting their next pusher run up "The Mountain" to Gallitzin and back. Beyond them is the marshaling yard for the PRR's Erecting & Machine Shop that's stocked with FM's, "GEEP's," freight and passenger "Sharks," even a GE 44-tonner or two! Photo taken from Juniata's 8th Street Bridge. This photo comes from a color slide set entitled "Diesels On The Pennsylvania" that's produced and distributed by Blackhawk Films of Davenport, Iowa (819-37). |
