Title:
PRR 117, L-1S, #2 of 2, c. 1957
Description:
Hollidaysburg. Here is the second of two successive duplicate 35mm color slides of photos by Herbert G. Frank, Jr., that were taken just West of Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania, c. 1957. Shown here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #117, an L-1S (2-8-2) "Mikado" built in Juniata during December of 1917 and retired in October of 1959 after 42 years of faithful service. It's pulling a mixed-cargo freight train out of the Hollidaysburg Yards. It's stopped at the dwarf signal, but will shortly head toward the Wye Switches in Duncansville ~ where it will either turn right and head toward the yards in Altoona, or go straight up the Allegheny Mountains via the Muleshoe Curve to Gallitzin and points West. Visible in the distance is the Blair County Court House steeple, located in the very heart of Hollidaysburg.
