Description:  AW. Here is an image of a photo by Arlington J. Wolfe that was taken at the 24th Street Turntable in Altoona, Pennsylvania, c. 1938. Shown here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #5469, a K-4S (4-6-2) "Pacific" built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works during March of 1927 and retired in May of 1956 after 29 years of faithful service. It's just returned from a passenger helper run up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin where it uncoupled and returned here, to be turned around, for yet another run up "The Mountain." Visible beyond it are several other locomotives that are also poised for helper/pusher runs. Beyond them are the 17th Street Bridge and several of the PRR's 12th Street Car Shops. Depicted here (R to L) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #5471 and #5352. Both are K-4S (4-6-2) "Pacifics." #5471 was built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in March of 1927 and retired in August of 1956, while #5352 was built in Juniata in March of 1924 and retired in February of 1950. At the left is PRR engine #8797, an H-10S (2-8-0) "Consolidated" built by the Lima Locomotive Works as Vandalia number "155" in August of 1916, renumbered PRR "8797" in 1917, and renumbered "9987" in 1951.

Photo Caption: "A rare Pennsylvania K5 walks a string of varnish up a slight grade approaching Timonium, Md., en route from Harrisburg, Pa., to Baltimore in the early Forties when this railroad was advertised as The Standard Railroad of the World. These brothers to the world-famous K4's were built with greater starting tractive force and greater power than the K4's, and carried a boiler pressure of 250 pounds per square inch. Only two were built (in 1929) ~ No. 5699 shown here, and No. 5698."
