YV 4-4-0 #22 - Yosemite Valley RR |
Description: |
Alco-Rogers built a pair of these 4-4-0 American type steam locomotives for Yosemite Valley RR as #22 and #23. The locos served until 1948 when at least #22 was scrapped. Still looks good but with parts missing, it appears to be sitting in the scrap line. Specs - serial #43167, class 22, 63" drivers, modest 165 psi boiler pressure, 18x26" cylinders, modest engine weight of 110,000 lb, very modest tractive effort of 18,753 lb. The little loco was scrapped in 1948. No date, location or photographer was listed for the photo. Although the correct reporting mark is YVRR, that current belongs to Yadkin Valley so I have listed it both as YVRR and just YV. |

It's serial number was 44389, and had 63" drivers, created 165 psi boiler pressure for its 18"x26" cylinders and produced 18,753 lbs tractive effort, enough to pull the short trains into the park. No photographer listed. |

Train 92 |
Description: |
From an old Post Card, here is Maine Central train 96 at the platform in Winn, Maine C1904. The locomotive MEC #60, origionally #25 prior to 1900 is a 4-4-0 from Rhode Island Works builders #1550. BLT April 1885, rebuilt in 1910, and scrapped in 1924. MEC Class E, Cyl: 17x24 with 62 inch drivers. The box car behind the locomotive looks to be MEC 5291 although the first digit of the number may be hidden behind the running lamp. According to the October 10th 1904 time table Train 96, which originated at Mattawamkeag at 4:10 PM, was due to depart this platform at 4:15 with an 6:20 PM arrival at Bangor. Connecting train would depart Bangor at 8PM with an eventual arrival in Portland at 1:05 AM and Boston at 5:57 AM. If you decide to go I suggest a sleeper out of Bangor. /DL |

BAR 4-6-0 #68 Boiler Explosion |
Description: |
Nice older photo of the remains of BAR #68 after a boiler explosion some time in 1895. Specs - D-1 class, 63" drivers, 180 psi boiler pressure, 20x26" cylinders, engine weight of 144,500 lb, tractive effort of 25,257 lb. Since this data base will not accept dates before 1900, it has been arbitrarily listed as 1/1/1900 although the correct date for the photo is 2/9/1895. The photo is from the Ray F. #85 Under the Pile Up |
Description: |
This must have been quite an event. A head on collision. #85 must have been the lead locomotive in a double header. A 4-4-0, MEC #85 was renumbered from 126 in 1900. From Rhode Island, it was built in November of 1887 and sold in June 1905. Do you supose it was rebuilt after this smash up? RR History says it was sold and not scrapped. /DL |

SLSF 4-4-0 #94 - St Louis-San Francisco (Frisco) |
Description: |
Cooke Locomotive & Machine Works built this 4-4-0 as Kansas City Osceola & Southern Railway 10 and named "John J. Blair" in 1894 and was one of the smallest 8-wheelers ever built for American railroads. It was in the Frisco designated class 44 and had 60" drivers and developed only 155 psi boiler pressure. Even so, it was "dismissed from services" in 1934 after 41 years. This may be another handmade photo copied from an original print. |

LERR 4-4-0 98 |
Description: |
Louisiana Eastern 4-4-0 number 98 was parked under the shed in the gravel pit at Shiloh, Louisiana. This structure was the closest thing the railroad had to an engine house! The locomotive had been built by Alco’s Schenectady Works (45921) in January 1909 as Mississippi Central 98 and was acquired by the LE in 1946. About five months after this photo was taken, the 98 was sold to Tom Marshall and shipped to the Strasburg Railroad in Pennsylvania, then It moved to the Wilmington & Western in Delaware. |
