PRR F7A #9764 - Pennsylvania RR  Contributor's Pick!
Heading through the famed Horseshoe Curve is this 1951 EMD F7A unit, #9764. The unknown photographer states on the back, "3 unit EMD headed by #9764 crawls up Horseshoe Curve. The train consisted of about 95 loads, with 2 unit Baldwin "Thousand Legger" "Snapper" on rear. Can anyone expain the pusher units used? Note the open door "air conditioning" on this lead unit.

Peter Hultgren General I think "2 unit Baldwin Thousand Legger" refers to a pair of Baldwin Centipede diesel locomotives. Each had numerous axles (not sure how many) and were semi-permanently paired together. They were first assigned to lead passenger trains but were then relegated to pusher service. 1/10/2014 12:53:59 PM
Alan Fricker General I think Peter's right; Baldwin Centipedes. Nice, slow speed service where those locos had some success. 1/10/2014 9:15:30 PM
Wendy Crim General So nice to see some older action shots. 1/11/2014 7:41:49 AM
Fred Stuckmann General They looked like this: http://www.bing.com/images/search?q=baldwin+centipede+locomotive+photos&id=80ED98A36447D4ED64B03130A49593CCA9C6F57B&FORM=IQFRBA#view=detail&id=80ED98A36447D4ED64B03130A49593CCA9C6F57B&selectedIndex=0 Nice shot. 1/11/2014 11:08:07 AM
Marc Boudreau General My understanding is that the Centipedes were not successful in pusher duty due to frequent derailments. Not the locomotive’s fault as these long behemoths were not intended for pusher duty. 2/3/2022 3:06:41 PM
