Tom Beckett General I was riding this line back about 1974 and had to wait for this bridge to allow a dredge through. Who ever would have thought they would actually operate it-and that there would be marine traffic in Jamaica Bay!! The trestle part of this bridge was originally wood, and had all kinds of issues with being out of alignment due to water and weather issues. Finally, there was a fire in 1950, and the LIRR, who owned it at the time, abandoned the line, selling it to the NYCTA. They rebuilt it-the structure you see today-and started running the IND A trains here as an extension of the Fulton St line, with double fare to Broad Channel and beyone, something that stuck in the craw of Rockaway riders til Abe Beame, who was from Belle Harbor, eliminated it after he became mayor in 1973. The LIRR now reaches Far Rockaway via Valley Stream, but the A train is a lot more fun to ride. 7/21/2017 2:39:55 AM
