Here is a painting by Mr. Donald E. Antes, Jr. It's the cover illustration on the April 1976 issue of "Railroad" magazine. Cover Caption: "Our classic cover painting of a Pennsy train on Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pa., was done by Donald E. Antes, Jr., president of Hall of Steam, 1407 N. Atherton St., State College, Pa." Depicted here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #1361, a K-4S (4-6-2) "Pacific" built in Juniata during May of 1918, retired in September of 1956, enshrined at the Horseshoe Curve on 08 June 1957, restored for excursion service during 1987-1988, then withdrawn from service and disassembled due to safety concerns, and still not reassembled to wholeness. [N.B.: Mr. Antes's work reminds me of a similar "Horseshoe Curve" scene painted by Mr. Grif Teller in 1935.] |
