L&N Transfer Run
Repowered Louisville & Nashville S2m 2370 was on a transfer run along the Mississippi River on its way from JULIA STREET YARD to GENTILLY YARD. The locomotive had been built in July 1949 as Lehigh & New England 612, was purchased by the L&N in 1963, repowered in 1968 and retired in 1979. The train was about to pass under the 33-story WORLD TRADE CENTER NEW ORLEANS – previously the INTERNATIONAL TRADE MART – at No. 2 Canal Street. For two years, from the time it opened in 1967 until it was superseded by the 45-story PLAZA TOWER in 1969, this had been the tallest building in New Orleans. (approximate date of photo)
