| Two members of Union Pacifics SD70M fleet idle in the middle of the Eugene Yard. UP famously ordered 1000 of these 4300 horsepower brutes in early 2000. Construction would begin at three locations contracted by EMD in the US, Canada, and Mexico. The 1000 unit order was later expanded, with around 400 additional engiens being constructed. Added to the total roster were the 25 ex-Southern Pacific units built in the mid 1990s. This would bring the total number of UP SD70Ms to 1,452 units, numbered 3779-5231. |
