| Celebration. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide (converted to B&W) by an unidentified photographer that was taken near Thorndale, Pennsylvania, c. 1955. Shown here (L to R) is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #5824 and another "Centipede" whose road number is not recorded. Both are BH-50's built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works as BP-60's rated at 3,000 horsepower each, but later regeared and classified as BH-50's rated at 2,500 horsepower each. #5824 was constructed in April of 1947 and retired in April of 1962 after just 15 years of revenue service. They're serving as tail-end pushers for a westbound iron-ore drag out of Pier 122 in South Philadelphia. |
